The following is a brief summary of the key elements of a start-up procedure following a prolonged period of shut down. References to specific guidance are available via the TSA website and greater detail can be provided on request.

  1. Ensure a minimum of three competent persons in attendance
  2. Survey the complete site and check all buildings externally. 
  3. Inspect all vehicles and follow standard checks before driving.
  4. Enter the building and implement security and fire safety procedures.
  5. Inspect all utility/services supplies and services generators.
  6. Take meter readings.
  7. Inspect all machines and equipment and ensure their isolation from all services.
  8. Review the ‘Site Closure check list’ and reverse the shut-down procedures, performing risk assessments on each item of    equipment.
  9. Follow the correct procedures for all services and services generating equipment. See table below which shows essential comments only.
  10. Re-commission each machine in turn following the manufacturer’s instructions. Refer to the machine break down and maintenance records.
  11. Prepare for processing work, staff training, quality control and process optimisation.
  12. Review your Business Continuity Plan and Risk Assessments/Method Statements; the BSI standards link provides guidance and there are industry specific models available.

  14. Manual and Corporate Responsibility Strategy. Industry specific models with guidance and check-lists are available.
  15. Refer to TSA Health, Safety and Environmental Guidelines; read the Table of Contents for general guidance and then selective critical advice sections.
The Laundry Closure Plant Preservation Guidance (click to download below) is provided for the purpose of ensuring that equipment which has been taken out of service, isolated from all services and which is no longer in normal use, is maintained in good order.

Before you close, you should consider the following;

  1. wash up all soiled stock
  2. run a hot wash as your last cycle on all washing machines
  3. review security procedures – who has keys?
  4. how will you continue to recieve deliveries and post
  5. customer communication
  6. notify insurance company
  7. set up rota to inspect premises at least every other day
